What to Wear for Professional Headshots in Ireland?

My name is Vincent S. Coster, and I am a professional photographer based in Loch Garman (Wexford).

One thing I find that people worry about when getting their headshots taken for LinkedIn or their actor resumé sheets is what they should wear. Of course, the goal of having these photos taken in the first place is the desire to look your best, so that a prospective employer will see that you are their candidate when it comes to getting that job.

The last thing you need is to regret your choice of clothing looking back. So here are the top hints that I give to my clients when booking a lot to get their headshots and professional portraits with me.

Clothing

Wearing block colours in neutral tones rather than bright colours with wild patterns is often the best choice for a LinkedIn Headshot. These can take over the image and take away from the portrait rather than add to it. While headshots focus mostly on the face with a little of the shoulders in the image, other professional portraits might show more of the sitter, and it is in this instance that a while pattern or striped outfit can become a little problematic. However, subtle shades of primary or neutral colours never diminish the photograph or take attention away from the sitter.

Also, dress in clothing that suits the purpose of the shoot. If the purpose is to have a headshot that you will use to get employment, you will want the photo to wear the same colours top to bottom and avoid too much skin, especially if you are having full-length, ¾-length or half-body photos. This is because we want the focus to be primarily on your face. Also, if you wear tops that show your upper arms, the arms will look larger than they are. Upper arms and hands always look larger in photos.

Minimum Jewellery

You might feel like wearing a lot of jewellery when getting a portrait done, and depending on the reason, this might be ok. However, if you are looking for a headshot to post on LinkedIn, attach to your resumé, or even place on a company website, it is best to keep the jewellery to a minimum and wear subtle pieces. The idea is to present a professional image, and excessive or elaborate jewellery might detract from that objective.

Hair Styling

The natural inclination will be to get your hair done up specifically for this shoot. But whether you have a haircut or your hair styled, it is best to get this done a few days before the shoot, as this gives your hair time to settle and sit more naturally than it will directly after your hair has been done. The main goal of these kinds of headshots is to look like yourself, and to be as natural and as professional as you can look. It is not about looking your most stylish. However, if you do wear your hair in a particular style and this is how you would usually look, then by all means do that. And there is a good reason for this.

Come As You Are

The main thing is to come looking like your usual self, or at least how you would look when you go to work. So, if you wear glasses, wear your glasses. If you wear make-up, then wear what you usually wear, exactly as you wear it. The main thing is to be natural.
